From the Nurse

Parents often ask when they should keep their child home from school and when it is alright for the child to return to school.  The guidelines below should help to make that decision more clear.

Your child should be kept home if they have:

  • Fever over 100°F
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Persistent pain (ear, stomach)
  • Widespread rash

A child can return to school:

  • 24‐hours after treatment for pink eye
  • A cough is no longer persistent with thick or constant nasal drainage
  • 24‐hours after the last episode of diarrhea without the use of medication
  • Fever free for 24‐hours without the use of fever‐reducing medication
  • Hair is treated and nit‐free from head lice – check your school’s policy
  • 24‐hours after the first treatment for impetigo. Sores should be covered.
  • 24‐hours after the first treatment for ring worm. Affected area should be covered.
  • 24‐hours after the first treatment for strep throat and fever‐free for 24‐hours without the use of
  • fever‐reducing medication
  • 24‐hours after the last episode of vomiting without the use of medication
  • Some illnesses require a physicians note, as well as treatment, to return to school
